A coroner’s inquest has made several recommendations to improve the safety of people working in logging operations.
The inquest was held into the death of Mario Roy, who died from injuries sustained while working in Saint-Quentin in 2018.
The five-person jury made five recommendations, which include that employers provide logging teams with appropriate means of communication, located directly on site.
It also recommended that a relationship be established between WorkSafeNB and all small businesses that includes inspections at fixed, regular intervals.
Other recommendations included:
- That legislative amendments proposed by WorkSafeNB to the Occupational Health and Safety Act be adopted into law as soon as possible.
- That standard provincial training be developed and made available to employers; that training be reviewed annually with employees; and that employers maintain a training log.
- That the term “working alone” be better defined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act to significantly reduce response time in an emergency.
The chief coroner will forward the recommendations to the appropriate government departments and agencies for consideration and response.
