Mounting pressure on the federal government to stand up to China and its telecom company Huawei.
Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole says his party wants Canada to push back, noting the Liberal government needs to grow a spine and not be the last country dealing with China to do so. “All countries but us have taken the decision to ban Huawei from their critical 5G infrastructure. Are the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and New Zealand so misguided that we would not follow their advise?”
The Conservative Leader adds the rise of Huawei was done by years of industrial espionage by China.
His party is introducing a motion that would beef up how Canada deals with China, calling for the Liberal government, in part, to make a decision on Huawei’s involvement in Canada’s 5G network.
“Second, we ask that the government develop a robust plan, as Australia has done, to combat China’s growing foreign influence operations here in Canada and its’ increasing intimidation of Canadians,” notes O’Toole.
The Opposition leader adds intellectual property theft and digital piracy are a reality when dealing with the Communist country.
