New Brunswickers providing legal statements to RCMP will now be able to do so while holding an eagle feather.
The feather will be made available for anyone providing a statement or being interviewed by police. Previously, New Brunswickers had the option to choose between swearing on a Bible or giving an affirmation.
According to a release from provincial RCMP, detachments will incorporate the eagle feather because of its importance to Indigenous culture.
Assistant Commissioner Larry Tremblay says the move is part of a long-standing approach to improving the Mounties’ relationship with Indigenous communities.
“This initiative represents a recognition of Indigenous rights and respect for Indigenous culture when engaging with the clients and communities we serve.”
The release states the eagle is revered by Indigenous cultures because of its proximity to the creator.
“(The feather) represents a connection to the creator and demands the holder speak the truth,” the statement reads.
Anyone will be able to use the feather, and it will be available to be held by clients who would like to hold it as comfort when interacting with police at a detachment.
The RCMP will implement the feathers in a phased approach across the province.
