A Riverview salon owner is upset her business was forced to close in the orange phase of the COVID-19 recovery plan.
Ashley McDavid, who owns Luxe Salon, has launched a petition that is attracting a lot of attention from others who also feel salons and other esthetics businesses should have been kept open.
“Dining rooms and bars still remain open where people go face to face. Still sitting in those places, it’s just as risky. So either close us all or let us be open as well,” questions McDavid.
“We take education in infectious disease, sanitation and disinfection. We have also have had to implement some extreme measures just to reopen back in May. We really feel like we are safe and prepared to be open during the orange phase.”
McDavid is hoping her petition gets noticed by Premier Blaine Higgs and New Brunswick’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell so they will reconsider their decisions at the orange level. The petition already has over 8,000 signatures.
“A lot of people really enjoy getting beauty services. Making sure their hair is cut, their nails are done, eyebrows waxed, things like that. Not only for our clients but for the mental health of our staff. Our industry is made up of a lot of single moms, which is just heartbreaking because they are not working right now,” McDavid says.
Zones one and five in New Brunswick are both currently in the orange level of the COVID-19 recovery plan due to a rising number of cases in those areas.
