Kathy Bockus is following in the footsteps of her former boss.
The PC MLA-elect for Saint Croix is the next person to represent the riding following the 2019 death of veteran politician Greg Thompson.
Bockus worked for Thompson but she doesn’t really think of herself as his successor because he was a “legend” who knew so much about politics.
“I’m just honored. The last conversation we had he said, ‘keep doing what you are doing and take care of people’. So now, with this win, I can,” Bockus said.
The MLA-elect thinks it was the right call to have an election calling Premier-elect Higgs “very astute” and a “good businessman.”
Bockus is a former journalist who Thompson recruited because she knew the people and the issues in the riding.
“I really liked his style of politics because once the election was over party colours and party lines disappeared,” Bockus said.
Bockus said once people came into Greg Thompson’s office looking for baby formula or a job it didn’t matter what party they worked for.
Bockus said the reality of winning hasn’t sunk in yet but, she thinks it will feel great when it does.
“We now have a voice in Fredericton again. It’s been a long stretch. We did have an awful lot of help from the other ministers after Greg’s death. They took care of us but, it’s different when you have someone of your own sitting at the table,” Bockus said.
