The leader of the provincial Green Party is committing to reinstating the Tuition Access Bursary for students with an income under $60,000.
David Coon says he was astounded that none of the other party platforms had any mention of post-secondary students but that his party is ready to act.
“Because we believe we need to move towards ultimately the elimination of tuition in our post-secondary institutions but the tuition benefit program was a big step in that direction, provided access for a lot of students who otherwise would not have been able to attend college or university and we will reinstate it,” he says.
Coon says big banks shouldn’t be making money off students who are borrowing to pay for their education, that’s why the Greens also want to eliminate interest fees on provincial loans.
A Green government would also bring back the Timely Completion Benefit so anyone graduating within five years, would have a maximum of $20,000 in debt.
