Newcomers Centre Using 3-D Printer To Fight COVID-19

The Saint John Newcomers Centre has produced 2,000 masks, which they are giving away for free, using a 3-D printer.

The masks can be ordered directly from the Newcomers Centre, and are being produced thanks to a private donation, and being led by UNBSJ students.

Emily MacMackin is a communications specialist with the group. She said they’ve distributed masks throughout the community.

“We’re giving them to groups throughout the city, and we’re really targeting community organizations and non-profits,” said MacMackin.

The project was a summer initiative, and could continue into the fall, though that hasn’t yet been determined.

So far, the masks have received rave reviews:

“Everybody seems to be really on board with the idea,” MacMackin said. “To be able to provide face masks to people who might otherwise not have access to them is really important.”

She says the mask project is largely being handled by UNBSJ student Jason Walsh, and a team of helpers and volunteers.

“Volunteers can come in and learn to 3-D print, and then 3-D print their own face masks.”
