The government’s new COVID-19 app is now ready to download on your smartphone.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the app will let you know if you have been in contact with someone who also has the app and who has tested positive for the coronavirus.
“If that’s the case it will then encourage you to call your provincial health services for guidance on what to do,” explains Trudeau.
The prime minister stresses the app is completely voluntary and does not collect any personal information from you like your name, address or location.
In fact, both the Canadian and Ontario privacy commissioners support the use of the app.
For now, the app only works in Ontario but all Canadians are being encouraged to download it, since Trudeau indicates his government is working with health officials in other parts of the country to eventually get the app up and running across Canada.
Trudeau adds, “The more people use it the better it can trace and therefore slow the spread of the virus.” noting, “health experts say if enough people sign up this app can prevent future outbreaks of COVID-19 in Canada.
