One of the country’s big banks says Moncton was the best place in Canada to find a job in the second quarter of 2020.
The BMO Labour Market Report Card ranked the Hub City first out of 33 cities and the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Moncton is not surprised.
CEO John Wishart says since the pandemic began, Moncton has been doing reasonably well compared to other parts of the country.
He feels New Brunswick handled the pandemic response quite well and the province opened up faster which brought more people back to work sooner.
“You know things like trucking, finance and insurance… even the call centre sector… all of these sectors continued to have virtually full employment throughout this period. So that also has to be taken into account,” says Wishart.
But the news isn’t all rosy given that several large companies announced layoffs recently including WestJet, Organigram and Atlantic Lottery.
Despite the recent job losses, Wishart believes this region will fare better over the long term than many other jurisdictions across the country.
Saint John ranks number 16 on the list, up three spots from the same quarter last year.
