There are now a total of six cases of COVID-19 in Prince Edward Island.
One new case was reported Thursday by chief medical health officer Dr. Heather Morrison.
It is a man in his 20s who is a close contact of a previous case, “He initially tested negative, but as per protocol, he needed to remain in self-isolation. He developed symptoms yesterday and was re-tested, and the positive results came in last evening.”
Dr. Morrison says five of the latest cases are Islanders in their 20s and they are all linked, “So, overall the risk of COVID-19 in the province remains low.”
She adds that the recent cases are not connected to the Atlantic bubble.
The sixth active case is an essential worker.
The second round of testing at long-term care home Whisperwood Villa is underway.
One of the cases diagnosed earlier this week is an employee there.
“The retesting of staff started yesterday and anticipate having all of the testing done by Friday, July 10th,” Dr. Morrison says.
Results are expected Friday.
Meantime, Nova Scotia had no new cases to report Thursday.
