Canadian Blood Services wants New Brunswick blood donors to step up this summer by booking an appointment before the end of July.
As hospitals resume procedures put on hold by COVID-19 resume, the need for blood is rising fast.
Clinic hours have been expanded and more appointments added to meet the increased demand.
Every blood type helps patients but, there is a bigger need for O-negative blood right now.
The universal donor is the only type compatible with all other blood types.
The number of donations often decrease during the summer because of changes in routine making it harder for people to find time to donate.
Unfortunately, summer often includes a higher number of collisions resulting in the need for more blood transfusions.
To save one person in a vehicle crash, it can require up to 50 blood donations.
More than 1400 appointments have to be filled which includes mobile clinics in Fredericton, Hampton, Oromocto, St. Stephen, Sussex and Woodstock.
Appointments can also be made at the permanent sites in Saint John and Moncton.
