Hundreds of people attended a rally and march against racism through the streets of downtown Moncton on Monday afternoon.
The event began with a rally at Victoria Park before marchers chanting “Black Lives Matter” made their way to Moncton City Hall for another rally.
The event was organized by Nellys Kalgora, an 18-year-old student from Ecole L’Odyssee, who only expected a handful of people to show up when she posted it on Facebook.
She believes education is key to a better understanding for those who are not black.
“The only way people will listen is if we speak up. Not necessarily angrily but if we speak up and talk about it, we can talk about peacefully,” she says.
Many participants wore masks and were trying to follow physical distancing guidelines.
Although the protest was led by students, people of all ages took part.
While the Moncton event was peaceful, riots have broken out in numerous American cities following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, who recently died in police custody in Minneapolis.
