The Anglican Diocese of Fredericton has unveiled new measures to ensure the health and safety of parishioners.
In a statement, the diocese said the common cup will no longer be used during Holy Communion until further notice.
It said communion will only be offered through consecrated bread, adding that dipping the bread into wine should not happen under any current circumstances.
“Although there is no evidence to suggest that illnesses such as influenza have been transmitted due to the use of the common cup, there is no definitive information about how COVID-19 is transmitted,” said the statement.
Clergy and lay leaders have also been asked to familiarize themselves with the Department of Health guidelines for event planning and apply them to their parish situations.
“Some of the recommendations are to avoid physical contact (for example, when Passing the Peace), and to cancel gatherings of more than 150 people,” said the diocese.
