Two New Brunswick high school students are part of this year’s class of Loran Scholars.
Heather Chisholm of Quispamsis and Dhanishta Ambwani of Fredericton are among the 36 students selected this year.
Each Loran Award is valued at up to $100,000 over four years of undergraduate study, including mentorship and summer experiences.
Winners are selected based on evidence of character, commitment to community service, and leadership potential.
According to her bio on the Loran Scholar Foundation’s website, Chisholm founded and leads an international school construction project, and she spoke at the 2018 Round Square International Conference as a Kurt Hahn recipient.
Chisholm, who attends Rothesay Netherwood School, helps organize a youth-run concert to combat teen poverty, and mentors youth through Go Girls. She also runs community events, directs student productions, participates in debate and basketball, and captains the rowing team.
Ambwani, a student at Leo Hayes High School, founded and leads the Youth for Youth Art Collective in her community. The collective’s mission is to create and empower a community of youth artists.
She leads her school’s Model UN club and initiatives to provide free menstrual products and meals to those in need. Ambwani also volunteers actively at the hospital and was a student intern at NB Power.
Nearly 5,200 students applied for the prestigious award this year. That number was narrowed down to 88 finalists who attended the National Selections.
Each of the 36 Loran Scholars was interviewed or assessed by up to 12 different people over the course of three months.
