A New Brunswick MP has decided he will not seek the federal Conservative leadership.
John Williamson, the MP for New Brunswick Southwest, floated the idea a couple of weeks ago.
But in a series of tweets Tuesday, Williamson said he has decided now is not the right time.
“Over the past two weeks I’ve been talking and listening about Conservative hopes and vision for our party,” said Williamson.
“While I believe solutions to Canada’s problems will come from Conservatives, I’ve decided after discussions with my family and friends that now is not the right time for me.”
Williamson said his focus now will be on helping Conservatives become the “party of aspiration” once again.
“The election last fall showed that Canadians are ready for an alternative to Justin Trudeau and the Liberals,” he said. “They’re looking for a leader who’s authentic and a party that’s principled and practical. The Conservative party has to be ready to provide that alternative.”
The MP went on to say he and his wife, Kelly, were overwhelmed by the support and encouragement they received from Conservatives across the country.
Kelly and I were honoured and overwhelmed by the warm support and encouragement we received from members of caucus and Conservative Party activists from across the country to run for leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. #cdnpoli 1/X
