What are the major issues facing the Trudeau government in 2020?
A Canadian politics professor at Mount Allison University says continued reconciliation with indigenous people and tackling climate change will be parts of the agenda.
Mario Levesque says improvements are needed for infrastructure in First Nations communities.
“They have to be able to produce in incremental steps in achieving some progress on this. For example, if they can reduce boil water advisories or if they can improve health care services and show tangible improvements that will be a win,” he says.
He thinks Ottawa must also start addressing recommendations from the Missing, Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Inquiry.
Levesque admits it will be a bit of a balancing act when it comes to climate change since the federal government will want to make positive changes to reduce emissions.
At the same time, he says they must also support the oil industry in the West and a pipeline which Canadians own.
He adds westerners already feel alienated from the rest of the country given the growing Wexit movement.
Parliament resumes sitting on January 27.
