More than 100 of the country’s top curlers will be coming to Greater Saint John later in March.
The 2020 Canadian Masters Curling Championships will take place at the Riverside Country Club in Rothesay and the Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club in Saint John.
Wayne Cooper, the vice-chair of the tournament, said they expect up to 28 teams will take part.
“The provincial playoffs in each area or territory will determine who comes, both the men’s and the women’s teams,” said Cooper.
While many of the participating teams have not been determined, one familiar name is guaranteed to hit the ice.
Al Hackner is a two-time Brier winner, Canadian Men’s and Senior World Champion and is the only skip in Canada to have won the Brier, Seniors and Masters Championships.
Cooper said members of the tournament’s organizing committee have lots of experience with events like this.
“Many of the folks that are involved in the committee have been involved in hosting either provincial events or working with the Masters or the Worlds that were here,” he said.
Saint John hosted the Masters Championship in 2010 and the Women’s World Championship in 2014.
Cooper said the event is expected to inject as much as $300,000 into the local economy.
He said they are looking for volunteers to help this event a huge success for the region.
“You can pick your particular expertise or you can look and see what’s available from helping in the curling clubs as far as hosting, interacting with the players, or driving them around,” said Cooper.
The tournament will take place from March 29 to April 5.
The Masters Championship is one of 14 annual Canadian championships where provincial associations compete for points in order to win the MA (Member Association) Cup, presented by TSN (highest points) and the Governor’s Cup, presented by Curl Canada (biggest year-to-year improvement on points).
