The provincial Green Party leader says the minority Higgs government is likely going to fall at some point in the New Year.
In a year-end interview, David Coon says the People’s Alliance had only promised 18 months of support, which ends in March, and there are also by-elections to be held.
“You never know with a minority government. There’s a high likelihood that there will be an election some time in 2020,” he said.
Coon says looking at Canadian history, minority governments tend to last on average two to two and a half years.
“We’re starting to move into that zone,” he said.
Coon says looking back on 2019, he’s is pleased with what his caucus has done.
The Green Party of New Brunswick introduced several bills in the legislature this year, including changes to the tenancy act, which Coon says he takes pride in.
“We brought forward a bill to improve the protections for tenant, including making it possible for victims of domestic violence to actually get out of their leases very quickly, and I’m pleased to say that the government actually took that part of it and brought in their own bill,” he said.
Coon’s wish for New Brunswickers in 2020 is from something a friend once told him: “If you’ve got a roof over your head, food on the table and someone who loves you, you can’t do better than that.”
