Public health has declared an outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) in the Moncton area and in Miramichi.
Dr. Yves Leger says a higher number of cases than usual are being recorded in multiple settings including workplaces and schools.
Whooping cough begins with cold-like symptoms and eventually leads to serious coughing spells over a period of several weeks.
The respiratory disease is easily transmitted mainly through droplets from the nose, mouth and throat of an infected person.
Whooping cough is most dangerous for babies and young children who may not be up-to-date with vaccines.
Dr. Leger says the best defence to protect yourself is through immunization.
A case of whooping cough was diagnosed at Bernice MacNaughton High School last month.
