A Saint John charity has been recognized for how it spends its donor dollars.
Bobby’s Hospice has been named one of Canada’s 100 best charities by Maclean’s.
The magazine assessed hundreds of major charities to see what they do with each donated dollar and how transparent they are.
Sandy Maxwell, chief executive officer of Bobby’s Hospice, said they are thrilled with the recognition.
“We work hard every single day to properly steward our donor dollars and ensure that the maximum amount is going into patient and family care and a smaller amount to administration and fundraising, although they are necessary,” said Maxwell.
Bobby’s Hospice placed 45th overall on the list and third in the health category.
According to the numbers released by Maclean’s, the charity spends 7.7 per cent of its revenue on administrative costs and 23.9 per cent on fundraising costs. It received a grade of 90 per cent for financials and 100 per cent for transparency.
Maxwell said the recognition is not only good for them — but also sends a good message to potential donors.
“I think people can be assured that when they donate to us that their dollars are being used very wisely,” she said.
Other charities which made the list include Food Banks Canada, the Canadian Red Cross, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
