The province is eyeing legislative amendments that would make it easier for those in an abusive relationship to leave a dangerous situation.
Changes to the Residential Tenancies Act would allow victims of domestic violence, intimate partner violence, sexual violence or stalking to end their lease early.
Those with fixed term or year-to-year leases will be able to give one month’s notice to break a lease, instead of current three months.
Tenants will need to provide landlords with an emergency intervention order, an order of the court, or a statement from a support system contact, such as a peace officer or an outreach worker.
Women’s Equality Minister Sherry Wilson says the amendments are part of a series of changes aimed at better supporting victims of violence.
Wilson says if passed, New Brunswick would join nine provinces and territories that have made similar changes to their legislation.
