UPDATE: One Arrested After Armed Standoff

Police say one person has been arrested after an armed standoff in the north end of Saint John.

Spokesperson Jim Hennessy said officers were called to a home on Anglin Drive just before 5 p.m. Monday.

Hennessy said after negotiating with a man inside, a woman was released from the home just before 6:30 p.m.

He said officers continued their negotiations and, just before 10 p.m. a man was taken into custody without incident.

No one was hurt and there is no word on charges at this time, Hennessy said. Several residents in the area had to be evacuated during the incident.

Several other streets in the area were also closed, including Sandy Point Road, Cranston Avenue, Thornborough Avenue and Parks Street.

Officers also had both ends of Parks Street Extension blocked off earlier in the evening, where the force’s new armoured rescue vehicle was visible. The street reopened to traffic shortly after 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Earlier in the day, nearby Princess Elizabeth School was placed under a “hold and secure” at the request of police, who also ordered a lockdown at a nearby daycare and Rocmaura Nursing Home.

Zoë Watson, superintendent of the Anglophone South School District, said they were asked by Saint John police to keep students inside.

“Bus students were dismissed but police asked walking students to remain inside the building as they investigated a situation,” said Watson in an email, adding a talk mail message was sent home by the principal.

The school tweeted about the situation at 3 p.m. Monday. In a follow-up tweet posted about 30 minutes later, the school said the hold and secure had been lifted.

Hennessy said police continue to investigate an “incident” which led to the lockdowns and hold and secure. It is unclear if the incident was connected to Monday evening’s standoff.
