City councillor David Hickey is hoping to clean up mailbox clutter with a new “flyer delivery” bylaw.
The bylaw would stop regular flyer circulation, and create an opt-in model for those who still want flyers delivered.
Hickey says Moncton’s city council is also exploring a similar bylaw.
“It’s been an issue that’s been consistently raised with me from residents. It’s been an issue that I’ve seen whether it’s flyers polluting your driveways, sidewalks, streets and just highlighting the level of waste that these create,” he said.
He says the bylaw also comes from an effort to make Saint John more sustainable.
“I think it’s really time that council stepped up and had some kind of bylaw in place to control the level of waste, as well as the level of trash that we’re seeing. It impedes snow removal, sidewalk cleaning, all that stuff,” he said.

He says while public response has been positive, some say council should be focused on budget cut discussions instead.
“While we focus on these really impactful cuts that we’re talking about and as well as the future and vision of sustainability for the city, we can work some of these small, structural changes that really just make Saint John a better place to live,” he said.
The flyer motion will be discussed around the council horseshoe on Monday night.
