The $20 million facelift at the Saint John Airport is almost finished.
President and CEO Derrick Stanford says it’s a real accomplishment to have an airport with such modern safety standards along with new runways and lighting.
The work also includes new drainage out on the airfield and runway and safety areas.
“One of the more important features is the addition of centreline, high-intensity LED lighting down the middle of our longer, instrument runway,” Stanford said.

The larger runway has been closed since August but on Tuesday, Stanford expects it will be open this week.
“We hope to open the runway in the next 48 hours, maybe even sooner if we can get all our final inspections completed,” Stanford said.
He says one of the last items to complete is a flight by NAV Canada to update specific information surrounding the new airfield.
“They have a special plane that’s equipped to come in and take all the calibrations of the approaches and the takeoffs. They will update all of the documentation and all of the calibrations,” Stanford said.
Because of this investment, Stanford says the Saint John Airport is now is equipped for another twenty years of sustained growth.
The project was funded by the federal and provincial governments and the airport itself.
