The Conservatives have taken back the riding of New Brunswick Southwest from the Liberals.
John Williamson defeated incumbent Karen Ludwig after losing to her in the 2015 election.
As of 1:50 a.m. Tuesday, Williamson had 18,779 votes while Ludwig had 9,692, with 178 of 180 polls reporting.
Williamson said he thinks there are a couple of reasons why the Conservatives won this time around.
“It’s part of disappointment in the Trudeau Liberals, but it’s always at the same time turning to new ideas that are gonna tackle some of the issues that I think until now have been overlooked,” said Williamson.
Williamson said he was hearing a lot of positive feedback at the door, adding people were looking for a change in Ottawa.
He said he feels good about the chance to once again represent the riding, but added his heart goes out to Ludwig.
“I know she worked hard over the last four years to represent New Brunswick Southwest and these jobs are six, seven days a week, they’re non-ending,” he said.
Ludwig said it is a disappointing loss after all of the work her team put into the campaign.
“I was probably the hardest-working MP the riding has seen,” said Ludwig. “I’m proud of the work that we accomplished, certainly there’s more to do and I’ve set a standard that it’ll be very difficult for maybe some others to follow.”
Ludwig said she is proud of the campaign her team ran and she is looking forward to whatever comes next.
