The construction industry is facing a workforce shortage as significantly more workers are expected to retire than those entering in the
next decade.
The Construction Association of New Brunswick saw a need for additional funding for high school trade programs.
That’s why, 10 years ago it created the ‘Building for the Future’ fund in hopes to inspire students to pursue a career in construction.
The association has given over a 150 thousand dollars to 32 schools throughout New Brunswick for better access to resources and tools.
CANB spokesperson Nadine Fullarton says their efforts are already having an impact.
“We’ve spoken to former students at Harrison Trimble High School. Chandler Brooks for instance, he went on after finishing high school to do his carpentry education at NBCC and now he is in the process of completed a Block 1 in carpentry, working here in Moncton,” says Fullarton.
Fullarton says while they need to apply for funding, no school is ever turned away.
Schools get an average of 750 to 15 hundred dollars, depending on the need and class size.
