The United Way serving Saint John, Kings and Charlotte plans to raise $1.8 million to end domestic violence, help kids succeed and provide access to mental health services.
Campaign co-chair Dave Veale says people who give to the United Way like how their gift can show up in different ways.
“I am part of the Million Dollar Pledge, a number of companies that came together to give $10,000 each, $100,000 a year. What we liked was the vetting process where we could actually direct to an agency or non-profit the support of something we were passionate about. It happened to be literacy.” Veale said.
Veale said they sometimes forget what a goal of raising $1.8 million means.
Thank you to the nearly 500 who joined us today to launch our campaign and show #locallove that results in transformed lives. @dave_veale was on fire! pic.twitter.com/oa4Ozaixm3

“That helps us do what we want to do but to hear the first-person stories. For me, I think it’s just the courage to tell those stories is just remarkable. So I am excited the United Way encourages that and helps people step out and share their story. That can only help them and help us.” Veale said.

12-year-old Kalvin Rowe performed a song on the clarinet for the crowd. He is a member of two orchestras now after coming to the instrument through the Sistema program.
“I like it because I feel the music. If you went to one of my concerts, you could see me moving all the time.” Rowe said.
The United Way of Saint John, Kings and Charlotte annual campaign raises money to support 20 charities and 29 projects from Sussex to St Stephen.
