An Ontario man charged in connection following a break-in and arson at Kingsbrae Garden Cafe in Saint Andrews will stay in jail as sentencing has been delayed.
Christopher Briand was charged with arson, theft, break and enter, mischief and breach of probation after the incident on March 31st.
In early April, staff from the Kingsbrae Garden cafe told our newsroom someone attempted to light several fires in the building eventually succeeding in the women’s washroom.
Sentencing was delayed to allow Kingsbrae representatives time to provide documentation of the damage caused to the facility which now exceeds $200,000.
Provincial court Judge Andrew Palmer agreed with the defence that while Briand can’t pay restitution to Kingsbrae now, he may be able to in the future.
Court learned two letters were submitted to Palmer for consideration during sentencing, one from Briand’s parents and another Briand wrote to a friend on the subject of addiction.
A probation order from an Ontario court was also submitted.
Sentencing was adjourned until September 24th at 1:30 p.m. at the Saint John Law Courts.
