A Saint John police officer has special skills he uses competitively outside of his day job.
Constable James Smith works in forensics during the day and on his own time shoots specific targets in a very precise way as a rifleman taking part in the Olympic-style event known as the World Police and Fire Games.
He began shooting at targets using a .22 calibre rifle with his grandfather growing up in Nova Scotia.
In 2017, he competed at the World Police and Fire Games in California in a category called, large-bore.
“Which is a specific calibre which comes with a lot of regulation so everyone is on the same level and we shoot 300 to 1000 yards.” Smith said.
At a competition in Ohio in June, he participated in the small-bore category.
Smith explains this type of competition is not a large spectator sport with arenas full of people watching.
“It’s you and your rifle on the firing line and you are quite a distance from any spectators. So, it’s usually just your end result whatever your score is”.
Smith won gold in small bore at a competition in Ohio last month.
He is busy fundraising as he plans to attend the 2019 World Police and Fire Games coming up in China from August 8th to 18th, 2019.
