A Saint John teen is representing eastern Canada at the Miss Teen North America tournament in Orlando, Florida.
17-year-old Audrey Janes hails from the west side and began modelling in Grade 5 as a way to boost low self-confidence.
She found the process empowering and her coaches are very supportive.
“They are super nice, they really make me feel good about myself and getting up on runways and doing photo shoots realizing ‘wow, I look like that’ and ‘wow, I’m beautiful and I can do this’. It really empowered me to think, ‘oh all those people who are making fun of me they are just saying it’. It doesn’t mean anything,” Janes said in an interview from Orlando on Tuesday.
Today’s been a blast with all my Canadian sisters but it’s not over yet! Next stop the pulse nightclub memorial and then old town!

She says this event is different than the Canadian pageants because she finds the competition stiffer.
“This is a national pageant so all the other girls did have to win their regional competition to get here, but everyone is super friendly and it’s been a lot of fun.”
On Thursday night, the delegates start the preliminary round which includes an opening number, swimsuit and evening wear competitions.
The judges select how many advance with the winner crowned on Friday.
