A dead North Atlantic right whale discovered last week in the Gulf of St. Lawrence is being towed toward Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
A Canadian Coast Guard vessel found the whale on Monday.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is working with marine mammal experts to organize and conduct a necropsy to help determine the cause of death.
The whale is being towed toward Petit Étang, where officials hope to perform the necropsy Tuesday morning.
The dead whale was initially spotted last Thursday during an aerial surveillance flight by Transport Canada.
The exact date, location and cause of the whale’s death are unknown.
