People who summer on Kennebecasis Island got some unwelcome news on Friday that ferry service which normally returns this weekend is delayed.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says the service will not return until early next week because of required repairs needed for the contracted tug and barge to meet Transport Canada requirements.
Shane McGrath’s parents have a camp on Kennebecasis Island and he tells us the last minute notice has ruined a lot of weekend plans.
DTI has a passenger shuttle service in place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
McGrath says the shuttle doesn’t help people bringing food, water and other heavy essentials to set up their camp for the summer even for those living closest to the ferry landing.
“There is only a probably a handful of camps that are accessible right from there and even for them it’s quite an incline but, for most of the people their camps are at the far end of the island.”
McGrath says many people were disappointed to learn on Friday they didn’t have transportation.
“You are completely isolated from getting over to your camp. It’s the long weekend and people have plans. There is no other way of getting over there unless you have a boat.”
McGrath estimates it’s a 10-minute drive from the ferry landing on dirt roads to most camps on Kennebecasis Island.
