The federal government wants to make sure Canada’s coastlines are protected, and they’re investing in Charlotte County in order to do so.
Federal Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Johnathan Wilkinson, as well as MP for Southwest New Brunswick, Karen Ludwig announced $2.4 million for scientific research at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in Saint Andrews under the Oceans Protection Plan, through the Multi-Partner Research Initiative.
The money will also support approximately twenty-five jobs at the Centre.
Wilkinson told the crowd that having the best available science is the key to respond effectively to marine incidents, including oil spills.
“Gaining a better understanding of the effects of our aquatic species will help us make the right decisions when it comes to clean-up measures and keep our oceans and our coasts clean, healthy and safe.”
Manager of Aquatic Services at the Huntsman, Chris Bridger says the money will contribute to the decision-making process of oil spill responders on all three Canadian coastlines.
“This investment from the Multi-Partner Research Initiative will provide a lasting legacy at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre that is aligned with our mission and values to advance collaborative marine science, and develop highly qualified personnel.”
The study will cover how oil spill response measures, such as using dispersant chemicals, will affect fish and other aquatic species.
The aim of the study is to ensure response measures don’t harm ocean life in the event of an oil spill, as well as providing the best information possible to first responders when making decisions about oil spills.
MP Karen Ludwig says the Government of Canada continues to invest in scientific research to help safeguard Canadian waters from oil spills and other harmful marine incidents, “The work carried out in our region will help protect not only our marine ecosystems here at home, but on all three coasts.”
