A one-time doubling of the federal Gas Tax Fund in the 2019 budget means $2.2 billion will be distributed to municipalities for short-term infrastructure priorities.
Fundy Royal MP Alaina Lockhart says municipalities in her riding will get just over $4 million in additional funding.
At a media conference at Quispamsis town hall on Wednesday, Lockhart called it “important funding that goes directly to the municipalities,” adding they can use it for the wide array of priorities.
“Our intent in doing that is to make sure they, in fact, do have those funds so they can take action quickly,” Lockhart said.
Quispamsis Mayor Gary Clark says this funding is essential to complete some important projects.
“Our lift stations, our infrastructure, our pump stations along the Gondola Point Road in particular certainly need upgrading as we saw last year during the flood. We were only minutes away from having to decommission those and it would have been a very serious issue.” Clark said.
The town of Quispamsis will use the $1.3 million it receives from this fund for wastewater projects in several areas of town, including Model Farm Road, Gondola Point Road, Roberts Lane and Vincent Road.
The Town of Hampton will get over $316,000 while the Village of Norton’s portion exceeds $95,000.
