She has a big heart for the Crescent Valley and she’s shown it through her work with the Around the Block community newspaper.
Juanita Black is getting ready to retire.
She started out with the paper on the second issue and tells us now it’s up to issue #64 with 16 pages distributing 8000 copies.
Black says she’s been responsible for a lot of the content including what goes on the front page.
“Somebody asked me ‘how we do it?’ and I said ‘it will hit ya’. When somebody sends you a story it’s just whoa and it takes you back and you want to do something else.” Black said.
Each community is responsible for filling their page of the paper with stories and pictures and Black tells us it’s all good news stories no “cops and robbers” or anything like that.
Juanita Black is also known for her work in poverty reduction and tells us sometimes she doesn’t think we’ve done enough.
She has been working with the Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation for 10 years now.
“It comes into the Social Development file where the Honourable Dorothy Shephard is the minister. ESIC tries to work together with the people that live in poverty and the organizations to try and make everything better.” Black said.
Black says she won’t sit around and grow old but, instead will keep her hand in the newspaper a few hours a week.
