An air quality activist in Saint John is concerned with some of the findings from the air quality report from the provincial Environment Department.
Gordon Dalzell says he applauds the Environment Minister for taking the issues at American Iron and Metal recycling plant seriously, but he told him he feels, even more, can be done.
” I asked him if he would enhance the monitoring of the pollutants coming off of that site because it is a public health concern and I also asked him to do some health studies,” stated Dalzell.
Dalzell says the report also showed the Benzene levels in the air in Champlain Heights is higher than the Ontario standard, which is the strictest standard in the world.
Dalzell says “There has been some decline in the levels but as far I am concerned it is totally unacceptable to have Benzene in the ambient air that we breathe.”
He is also concerned with the monitoring stations being moved off the customs building roof on Prince William Street saying they kept a close eye on AIM and the cruise ship pollution.
