If politicians can mail you, or meet you at your front door, should they be able to text you as well?
Some social media users say they received a text message over the weekend from Federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer.
The text message warned about the Trudeau government’s new carbon tax and reminded Canadians to fill up their gas tanks before gas prices rose on April 1st.
During an announcement in St. George, Andrew Scheer said no rules were broken.
“Well, I can assure you that all the rules were followed as it relates to communicating with Canadians on that. It was a helpful tool to remind people in the four provinces that are going to be paying this tax that they had one final opportunity to fill the tank before the cost of gas went up.”
The text message reads, “Andrew Scheer here. Trudeau’s carbon tax will raise gas prices on Monday. So fill up your tank! Help get rid of the carbon tax here:”.
The text also included a link taking readers to a page asking, “What will Trudeau’s carbon tax cost you?”
Scheer says the text was part of their innovative ways of communicating with Canadians as technology evolves.
“We use a variety of different formats on social media, online presence, and direct communications like mail, like going door-to-door, and by communicating through text messages.”
Scheer also stated they received “very positive feedback from people who appreciated the reminder that they had the opportunity to go out and fill up their tank before having to pay the new carbon tax.”
