Friday is International Women’s Day and many events will be held around the globe, including in the Kennebecasis Valley.
This is the 11th year for the women’s day event in the valley, which is organized by former MLA Mary Schryer.
Schryer says she first came up with the idea while travelling abroad to Africa during a previous International Women’s Day.
“I went to an event and I was astounded by the celebration and how much fun and life there was and I thought ‘as soon as I go home next year, I’m going to do an International Women’s Day event’ and that’s how it all began,” said Schryer.
The event in the Kennebecasis Valley alternates between Rothesay and Quispamsis.
Schryer points out women make up 52 per cent of the population in New Brunswick.
“That’s why this year’s theme is Balance for Better,” she said. “The better balance you have within an organization with gender-balance, the better the organization or the government is going to perform.”
Schryer said there has been some progress on pay equity but there is still a ways to go.
The guest speaker at this year’s event is Dr. Erin Schryer, the CEO of Origins Natural Learning Childcare.
It takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the qplex; you can register by calling 506-849-5778.
