Real Food Connections which set up shop in the converted Canterbury Street Car Park next to Picaroons in Saint John has closed after being in business for a total of 6 and a half years trying to connect those who eat with local food producers.
Founder Levi Lawrence says the decision is disappointing and was not taken lightly after years of developing services to better solve the problem of making local food more accessible. He calls the local food system in the region “broken” and concedes some suppliers may not get paid.
Lawrence says all options were examined while pointing out Real Food connections spent millions of dollars at local farms over the past years.
The company received many thousands of dollars in government grants and raised $270 thousand in a crowdfunding campaign a couple of years ago.
