The Fundy Regional Service Commission is presenting a proposed regional recreation plan for the future and asking for Common Council’s support.
The report concludes there should be more regional planning and co-operation but not regional control of ice rinks and sports fields.
Saint John is being urged to come up with a plan to decommission sports fields, tennis courts and ball diamonds to better reflect the city’s declining population. The city has enough to serve a population 25 per cent higher than it is now. It’s being recommended neighbouring communities make use of the recreational facilities in Saint John.
The report claims there’s little co-ordination of recreation facilities in the K-V and the big need in Grand Bay-Westfield is a multi-purpose community centre that could also be used as a community school. The report also sees the opportunity for greater collaboration with the school districts on recreation.
