The President of the firefighters union in Saint John, Local 771, Peter Alexander says their motto is “We’ll always remember and never forget”.
Alexander says firefighters and first responders are still dying to this day from being exposed to the dust and debris from the World Trade Centre’s destruction.
As Common Council meets tonight to determine the city’s priorities, Alexander warns against making any further cuts to the fire department.
He points out since 1993, the fire department has shrunk by 30 per cent with its callout rising by about 300 per cent and last year, more than 100 9-1-1 calls were missed because of under resourcing.
