September marks Big Brothers, Big Sisters month across Canada, a time to celebrate the successes of matching adult mentors with kids to help change lives.
Greater Moncton executive director Peter MacDonald says mentoring can have a powerful and positive effect on young people.
MacDonald says many of the kids they serve live in poverty which can often be a barrier to success.
“The one thing that we know that we can do to get them out of that is to actually show them that anything is possible. So what our mentors do is they actually take these kids and they open up their eyes to a world that they didn’t know about,” he notes.
Research has shown that kids enrolled in Big Brothers, Big Sisters are more likely to graduate high school and obtain a post-secondary education.
