We might be a smaller port than Halifax–but total cargo tonnage at the Port of Halifax was down 15% from the same period last year, according to the Halifax Port Authority, while here in Saint John total cargo tonnage has gone up from last quarter.
Port Saint John CEO Jim Quinn tells CHSJ News we’ve been fortunate to not experience challenges like they’ve seen in Halifax, like the Imperial Oil refinery shutdown.
Another reason for the decline of cargo tonnage in Halifax is an increased use of railways as opposed to ships to deliver grain to the Dover Industries flour mill.
