The New Brunswick Anti-Shale Gas Alliance is describing its legal action against shale gas development as a “science suit” with economic considerations not part of the legal action.
It’s challenging the proponents of shale gas exploration to provide scientific proof it can be done safely. Jim Emberger of the Alliance says a moritorium would be in the public interest until there is definitive scientific proof that shale gas exploration can be done safely.
Emberger says provincial Energy Minister Craig Leonard has alluded to scientific studies that show the safety of shale gas exploration but he hasn’t provided any specifics.
Emberger disagrees with a recent report released by Cape Breton University which concluded fracking doesn’t threaten groundwater.
