We all remember visiting the Sydney Street Courthouse, seeing the spiral staircase and the old county prison.
Ever since Peel Plaza was constructed, that building has no longer housed court proceedings and many in the community are wondering what will be done with it.
There had been some talk of upgrading the building and using it to hold meetings of common council. Mayor Mel Norton tells CHSJ News it’s not out of the question–and City Staff are also looking into more efficient ways to use the current space at City Hall.
The Sydney Street courthouse was originally built in 1830 then rebuilt in 1919, and would need considerable rennovations to modernize it.
