Provincial Health Minister Victor Boudreau has called a summit for Moncton on the congestion at hospitals. It will be held in October.
25 per cent of the acute care beds in the Horizon Health Network are being used by people who should not be in hospitals but for most of them, in nursing homes.
Horizon Health C-E-O John McGarry is calling it a crisis as patient days have gone up by 4 per cent with some people having to be given beds in the E-R because there are none elsewhere in the hospital.
McGarry says that 4 per cent is huge because it amounts to the equivalent of 70 beds.
