Dennis Oland’s defence team will be filing an appeal of his second-degree murder conviction on Saturday in the death of his father, high-profile businessman Richard Oland whose bludgeoned body was discovered in his investment firm office in uptown Saint John on July 7, 2011.
One of his defence lawyers, Jamie McConnell, confirming to our newsroom that the team is preparing to file the appeal and says they will be filing one in the “very near future.” The 12-member jury delivered the verdict following around 30 hours of deliberations and came as a shock to many.
A second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence however parole eligibility can be set anywhere from 10 to 25 years. All 12 jurors recommended that Dennis Oland have to serve 10 years before being eligible for parole. Dennis Oland’s sentencing is set for February 11, 2016.
Dennis Oland has been remanded into custody until that time and Mr. Justice Jack Walsh has ordered that a pre-sentence report be prepared.
