Maritimers going out on the water can report whale sightings right from their smartphone.
That’s according to Moira Brown of the New England Aquarium who says they’re trying to get the word out about Whale Alert throughout Eastern Canada so people can report sightings of right whales, which are criticically endangered with an estimated population of 522.
She recently received reports of two right whales off of Sydney, Nova Scotia which she says is exciting for them because they learn more about the movements of the animals and other areas that they should potentially survey.
As of this week, Whale Alert works on both Apple and Android devices. It was released back in 2012 as an information hub for sailors to get information on measures to reduce ship strikes to right whales but has since been revised to be interactive.
