Not all ice surfaces are created equal for professional events like figure skating and curling–and an upgraded ice plant chiller at Harbour Station means that Saint John is more competitive when it comes to attracting such events.
The new machinery was purchased through an $80,000 dollar investment from the federal government and $120,000 from the Harbour Station Comission. MP Rodney Weston tells CHSJ News it allowed Skate Canada to come here–and hopefully will attract more investments down the line.
Figure skating requires a thicker ice surface because of the skaters jumps digging deep into the ice, while for something like curling, the ice must be as flat as possible.
