Common Council passing a motion this week to have the provincial government repeal the 25 year LNG tax deal.
Councillor Greg Norton voted against the motion, he says he’s more concerned with managing the funds the city has rather than breaking deals.
Norton says the deal was done ten years ago and council provided those tax concessions to ensure the site was built in the east side of Saint John.
He says Saint John was in competition with Maine and if the city didn’t provide those tax concessions Canaport LNG wouldn’t be built where it is and the city wouldn’t have $500,000 worth of property tax coming in.
Bill Farren was the only other Councillor to vote against the motion.
Irving Oil releasing a statement saying It is extremely disappointing that Council would send a strong message to those who are considering investing in our City. Decisions of this type will deter long term investment and prosperity for our City.
